How do you find time to ham-it-up?

I find that it is sometimes very hard to have the time to get on the air.  The only time/place that I can regularly get on the air in during my commute.  The 112ish miles round trip in metropolitan Atlanta provide lots of time, but I am not talking about finding the time on 2M, I am talking HF, it does not matter if it is DX chasing, contesting, participating in nets, or even just casual ragchewing.

I do have some convenient/inconvenient excuses.  The previously mentioned 3 hours in the car to and from work, works against me.  I know, I know, I know, if I had a mobile HF rig that would be the solution, but I do not have the funds to do that at this time, so drop it.  I also spend over 9 hours in the office a day, so there is half the day down the drain.  I am a father and I do my best to be involved in their lives and activities.  I also do my best to keep my relationship with my XYL, kj4qhq, fresh and healthy.  I am also enrolled in college to finish my BSIT degree.  I am getter better at budgeting time for my studies, so that may free up some time, but really depends on the variable class to class work load.  Finally I am my churches Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, and Emergency Communications Specialist, while this does include radio, it is still mostly 2M.

I am by no means complaining about my life, I am just trying to get some help finding way to get on the air more often.

If any of you other busy hams have some tips that you use to hit the HF bands, please add them to the comments.

  1. It's taken me about 1.5 years to get my station set up, and it's not quite done. Same issues, except my commute isn't that long any more.

I've also just been called as an Emergency Communications Specialist, so that is helping.

Speaking of that, do you have any hints or tips for someone just starting out as an ECS?
